Archerfield Airport (ICAO: YBAF - 27°34′13″S 153°00′29″E) is Brisbane's secondary airport and is located just 11kms (6.8 miles) south-west of the city's Central Business District. Click here to view the airport on Google Maps.

It carries the largest number of general aviation movements of all Queensland airports, has the most aviation operators and flying schools in Queensland and is the home to over 200 aircraft. This, along with it's close proximity to Stradbroke, Moreton and Fraser islands, has made Archerfield Airport a favourite destination for corporate aircraft, charter, flying training and all kinds of maintenance requirements.

Archerfield Airport has a multi-runway configuration comprising two parallel runways in two different directions. Parallel 28/10 runways and their complementing full-length taxiways have sealed pavements. The main runway, 28R/10L, and its supporting taxiway are both equipped with pilot activated lighting to aid night time flying. The 04/22 crosswind parallel runways and taxiways have sealed runway thresholds.

Aircraft parking is currently available for 200 fixed wing aircraft on both sealed pavement and grassed areas. This is in addition to the secure parking within private hangars and maintenance facilities. Helicopter operations are facilitated with an approved helicopter landing site and aiming point, and separate parking areas.

Helicopters are directed to pod Tango for run-up, jet engine testing is only permitted at the run-up bay to 10L, and truck based dynamic engine test beds are in dry weather directed to pod Tango and in wet weather to the threshold of Runway 04R. These restrictions allow the necessary activity expected at a major secondary airport to continue without affecting the surrounding community.

There are 68 hangars on the airport including the new $3 million Corporate Hangar complex and over 80 businesses on site employing hundreds of people. The facilities developed are mainly aircraft hangars and workshops. Facilities also include Flying Schools, an historic passenger/administration building and the control tower which is located at the southern boundary. In addition, there is over 75 hectares of greenfield sites that can be developed for both non-aviation and aviation purposes.

Aircraft with an Aircraft Classification Number (ACN) greater than 6 can operate into Archerfield Airport on Runway 28R/10L subject to an approval by the airport management.

The airport is situated on Commonwealth Land and is operated by Archerfield Airport Corporation. It is subject to the Airports Act 1996. Therefore, the Corporation must produce a Master Plan for the airport every five years. The Archerfield Airport Master Plan (2017-37) was approved by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport on 15th July 2017. Key features of the Master Plan 2017-37 include:

  • The continued provision for Regular Passenger Transport aircraft should they be required in the future (similar to previous Master Plans)
  • The realignment of the grass runways to move them away from low-lying, flood prone areas
  • Options for the improvements to surrounding roads
Further information regarding the Master Plan 2022-42 can be found here.
